On February 14th, the state of Florida was victim to a tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The shooter, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, killed 17 people and injured 14, CNN reports. The following Thursday, the Florida gunman began his journey through the criminal justice system.

Cruz was officially charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. He was also not awarded any bail by the judge as well. After the hearing, Cruz’s defense attorney, Melisa McNeil, told reporters that Cruz feels sad, remorseful and mournful, according to theDaily Mail.

McNeil and Gordon Weekes, another member of Cruz’s defense team, confirm that Cruz suffers from depression, autism, and has dealt with other psychological issues. Weekes adds that Cruz is deeply troubled and believes that the teenager has suffered significant trauma that comes from the loss of his mother.

This Is What We Know About Nikolas Cruz: According to the Anti-Defamation League, Cruz hurled slurs at Muslims and black people and he had certain ties to white supremacists. They also report that Cruz said that he wanted to shoot people with his AR-15, the gun that was used in the shooting. CNN states that there were posts under videos on Youtube and other sites by someone that used the name Nikolas Cruz that included threatening comments. Some of the comments included “I wanna shoot people with my AR-15” and “I wanna die Fighting killing s**t ton of people.”

In September of 2017, a video blogger, Ben Bennight, apparently warned the FBI about a possible shooting threat from one of the Youtube users with the same name as Cruz. One FBI agent confirms that a field officer in Jackson, Mississippi interviewed the person who gave the tip. Unfortunately, there was no additional information found on the person who posted the threatening comment.

Jay-z is one of wealthiest hip-hop's artists in 2018: forbes

Last June, when Jay-Z and Beyoncé welcomed twins to their family, they did what many couples do in the wake of a new arrival--move to a bigger home--on quite an epic scale. Over the next few months, they shelled out $26 million for an East Hampton mansion and scooped up an $88 million Bel Air estate, adding 21,000 square feet per newborn. That's the sort of thing you can do when one partner is a pop demigod and the other is the richest rapper on the planet.

Jay-Z upped his net worth from $810 million to $900 million over the past year, seizing hip-hop's cash crown for the first time since Forbes started counting back in 2011. The Brooklyn-born mogul's jump is due mostly to the rising value of his interests in Armand de Brignac champagne and D'Ussé cognac, on top of nine-figure ownership stakes in his Roc Nation empire and Tidal streaming service.

"We always complain about, 'We don't own this, we don't own that.' … Here he is, this man who owns that," superproducer Swizz Beatz told me in an interview for my book 3 Kings: Diddy, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z and Hip-Hop's Multibillion-Dollar Rise. "The sky is not the limit: it's just a view."

Jay-Z, Diddy and Dre are not only the wealthiest hip-hop acts on the planet, but the richest American musicians of any genre. Longtime Forbes Five champ Diddy ranks No. 2 this year despite increasing his fortune slightly in the past 12 months; tepid trends in the vodka and cable TV sectors have affected his interests in Ciroc and Revolt, but heady growth at DeLeĂłn tequila, his joint venture with beverage giant Diageo--and massive annual earnings totals in recent years--have kept his net worth trending in the right direction.

Dre ranks third with $770 million, creeping upward thanks to the market trends boosting his nine-figure windfall from Apple's $3 billion buyout of Beats in 2014. The superproducer is also in line to receive a slug of Apple stock this summer worth well over $100 million; depending on the tech giant's share price at the time, he could leapfrog Diddy and Jay-Z when that happens.

After the top three, there's a long drop before the fourth and fifth names on the list: Drake and Eminem, tied at an even $100 million apiece. The youngest impresario of the bunch, 31-year-old Drake has earned more than $250 million since 2010, before taxes and spending; an equity stake in Virginia Black whiskey and pricey estates in Toronto, Canada, and Hidden Hills, California, pad his holdings. His inclusion on the Forbes Five represents yet another career goal achieved.

"If I'm not on your list this year, I'd be gravely disappointed," he told Forbesback in 2013. "That's pretty much my objective every year … other than making good music."

Eminem isn't known as a businessman like some of the other names on this list, but he's still the best-selling rapper of all time and moved more albums in the U.S. during the 2000s than any act in any genre. Fresh off new album Revival, he makes his Forbes Five debut as former listmember Birdman--Drake's Cash Money Records boss--slips below the $100 million mark in the wake of some apparent liquidity issues.

To compile the Forbes Five rankings, we follow the same procedures used to calculate our list of the world's billionaires (our annual update arrives Tuesday): valuing major assets, poring over financial documents, and speaking with analysts, attorneys, managers, other industry players and, in some cases, the moguls themselves.

So who will be the first hip-hop star to reach the billion-dollar mark? Trends in the spirits world could continue to play a key role for Jay-Z and Diddy. After the furious rise of vodka in the first part of this decade, fueled largely by flavored variants like those of Ciroc, the market has shifted towards cognac, whiskey and tequila.

"D'UssĂ© fits right in there," says Eric Schmidt, Director of Alcohol Research at Beverage Marketing Corporation. "I think DeLeĂłn is poised for growth … it could one day be the next PatrĂłn, but it's a long road."

Jay-Z, meanwhile, shouldn't be slacking off anytime soon: though he and Beyoncé bought their East Hampton abode outright, according to public records, their $88 million Bel Air mansion comes with a $52.8 million mortgage.

CDC Director Brenda Fitzgerald resigns after she purchased tobacco stock when head of health agency

The head of America’s leading health protection agency has resigned after it was revealed she had bought shares in a tobacco company.

Brenda Fitzgerald, director of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), quit as the result of what officials said were “conflicts of interest that made it difficult to do her job”.

“Dr Fitzgerald owns certain complex financial interests that have imposed a broad recusal limiting her ability to complete all of her duties as the CDC Director,” said Matt Lloyd, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services.

“Due to the nature of these financial interests, Dr Fitzgerald could not divest from them in a definitive time period.”

The resignation of Ms Fitzgerald, who had only been in the post a month, came a day after Politico reported she had bought shares in a company that produces tobacco, the major cause of preventable deaths in the US and something that that the CDC had long campaigned against.

“The tobacco industry spends billions of dollars each year on cigarette advertising and promotions,” the CDC says on its website. “Smoking costs the United States billions of dollars each year.”

Box Office: Marvel's 'Black Panther' Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide

Black Panther earned $9.9 million (-39%) on its fourth Friday of release. That sets the stage for a $41.5m fourth weekend gross, enough to A) top the box office for the fourth time in a row and B) snag the third-best fourth weekend gross ever behind The Force Awakens ($42m in 2016) and Avatar ($50m in 2010). If you adjust for inflation, a $42m weekend would be seventh on the list behind only Jurassic Park ($42m adjusted), Spider-Man ($45m adjusted), The Force Awakens ($45m adjusted), The Phantom Menace ($25m in 1999/$46m adjusted), Titanic ($56m adjusted)  and Avatar ($58m adjusted).

Again, that's not bad company. The film has now earned $530.8 million domestic. That means it will pass Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($532m in 2016/2017) and The Dark Knight ($534m in 2008) to become the seventh-biggest unadjusted domestic grosser of all time. And once it passes The Dark Knight, it'll be the second-biggest comic book superhero flick ever in North America behind only The Avengers ($623m in 2012). And at this juncture, that milestone may well tumble.

By the end of the weekend, Black Panther should have around $561 million in 24 days, giving it the third-biggest 24-day total behind only The Last Jedi ($572m) and The Force Awakens ($812m). Oh, and with $442m overseas (counting the $48.2m in its first two days in China), Black Panther indeed crossed $1 billion worldwide yesterday. It is the 33rd movie to top $1 billion in unadjusted global grosses, including the 16th from Walt Disney and the fifth from the MCU, alongside Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3 and Captain America: Civil War. And it will pass $500m overseas by tomorrow.

So now it's just a question of whether it can end the weekend past The Dark Knight ($1 billion), The Dark Knight Rises  ($1.085b) or even Captain America: Civil War ($1.153b). Once that happens, it'll sit behind only Iron Man 3 ($1.215b), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.4b) and The Avengers among all superhero flicks. So it'll probably end its run as the biggest comic book movie ever in North America and the biggest solo superhero flick ever worldwide.

What does it mean when your left lung hurts?

The lungs do not have a significant amount of pain receptors, which means that any pain felt in the lungs probably originates somewhere else in the body.
However, some lung-related conditions can result in pain in the left lung.
The chest contains several vital organs, including the heart and lungs. Because of this, it is understandable why a person who experiences pain in this area might be worried about what is causing it.
In this article, we take a look at some potential causes of lung pain, and what people should do if they experience this symptom.
Fast facts on left lung pain:
  • Left lung pain can be a symptom of many different conditions.
  • Symptoms may not be a medical emergency, but they could represent an underlying problem.
  • Treatments for left lung pain will depend on the underlying cause.

What could the cause be?

The following are examples of some of the more common causes of lung pain, including left lung pain:

Asthma

Left lung pain may be caused by asthma.
Asthma is a condition that causes airway inflammation and lung irritability, which make a person more prone to wheezing and shortness of breath.
Chronic coughing and wheezing associated with asthma can cause feelings of chest tightness.
Typically, this will make a person's chest feel tight on both sides, not just the left.

Costochondritis

Costochondritis is an inflammation of the connective tissue that joins a person's ribs to their breastbone. Costochondritis can cause pain that feels like chest pain, which can be one-sided.

Hyperventilation

Hyperventilation or rapid breathing can be the result of illness or panic attacks. This condition can affect the natural balance between carbon dioxide and oxygen inside the body.
One of the primary symptoms of hyperventilation is chest pain.
A person may also experience dizziness, headache, and trouble concentrating.

Lung cancer

Lung cancer does not usually cause symptoms at first. As lung cancer spreads, a person may notice symptoms such as a chronic cough, shortness of breath, and feeling tired or weak with no known reason.

Pneumothorax

Pneumothorax is when a portion or all of a lung collapses. This can cause sudden and significant chest pain on the affected side of the chest.
A pneumothorax can occur suddenly or after an injury or illness.

Pleural effusion

Pleural effusion is a condition where excess fluid builds up inside the lining of the lung, known as the pleural space. This buildup can cause difficulty breathing as well as discomfort on the affected side, which could be the left.

Pleurisy

This condition occurs when the two membranes of the chest wall become inflamed. When they rub up against each other, pain and shortness of breath can occur.
When a person has pleurisy, a doctor will do a variety of tests to find the cause. The cause could be a viral infection, trauma, or lupus, which is an autoimmune disorder that attacks a person's tissues and organs.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a condition where a person experiences a severe respiratory infection that can affect one or both lungs. If pneumonia affects the left lung, a person may experience pain in the left lung.
Additional symptoms might include a cough, fever, chills, and shortness of breath.

Pulmonary embolism

A pulmonary embolism (PE) is a blood clot or clots in the arteries of the lungs. A PE can occur after a person has had a surgery or been sedentary for some time.

Symptoms indicating a lung problem

Potential symptoms of a lung problem include shortness of breath or chest pain.
While some causes of left-sided lung pain may be mild, others can be cause for concern. Some signs that left lung pain could be a medical emergency include:
  • chest pain, particularly chest pain that radiates down the left arm
  • coughing up blood
  • lips or fingernails that are bluish in tint, which can indicate that a person is not getting enough oxygen
  • shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • temperature higher than 105°F
If a person experiences these or other symptoms, they should call 911 or have someone drive them to the emergency room immediately.

Signs of lung cancer

Lung cancer signs can include:
  • long-term changes to the sound and tone of a person's voice, such as hoarseness
  • chronic infection, such as bronchitis or pneumonia that will not go away
  • a cough that does not get better over time
  • coughing up rust-colored or blood-tinged mucus
  • unexplained feelings of fatigue and weakness
  • wheezing with no known underlying cause
If someone experiences these symptoms, they should see a doctor.

When to see a doctor

Whether the pain is related to the lung or feels as though it is, a person should see their doctor if their pain is interfering with their everyday life.
This is especially true if the pain is worsening instead of improving.

Diagnosing left lung pain

Woman looking at x-ray of lungs with nurse.
Imaging tests, such as an X-ray, may be performed to diagnose left lung pain.
A doctor will diagnose the cause of left lung pain by taking a medical history and carrying out a physical examination.
The doctor will ask questions about what makes the pain worse, what makes it better, and when the pain began. They will also listen to the lungs with a stethoscope.
Imaging tests
A doctor may recommend initial imaging studies, such as a chest X-ray to identify potential abnormalities related to the lungs. If this X-ray does not reveal any problems, but the doctor suspects an underlying problem, they may recommend further testing.
Further tests could include a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scan. These imaging studies can provide different, high-quality pictures of the lungs to aid in a diagnosis.
Blood tests
Other modes of testing may include a complete blood count to identify the number of white blood cells a person has. A high white blood cell count could indicate that an infection is present in the body.
Another test a doctor might use is a cardiac enzyme panel, which is a test to determine whether pain in the left lung is in fact chest pain related to a heart attack or another heart problem.
Doctors may also recommend individual tests based upon a person's symptoms in addition to left lung pain.

Treatments

Resting and taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications can help if the cause is related to muscles around the lung. These medications include acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
Treatments for other possible causes of left lung pain can vary. For example, if a person has a collapsed left lung, a doctor may insert a small tube between the ribs and into the space around the lung to re-inflate it.
Doctors may prescribe antibiotics to treat respiratory-related infections caused by bacteria.
The most important thing to do is see a doctor who can begin the diagnostic process so treatment can begin as soon as possible.

Takeaway

Left lung pain is a symptom that has many potential causes. The pain may often be related to nearby organs, such as the heart and stomach.
Anyone experiencing left lung pain should seek prompt medical attention to ensure that the pain is not a symptom of a serious underlying condition.
